The book of Job reveals how NOT to comfort friends in crisis. Job’s three friends started well by sitting silently with him for seven days, but then ruined everything by offering simple theological explanations for his suffering. They operated with a contractual view of God – do good, get blessed; sin, get punished. Jesus rejected this theology, showing that tragedy doesn’t mean divine punishment. When friends face crisis, they need our presence, not our explanations. The most powerful ministry is often sitting in silence with someone who’s hurting, listening without feeling pressure to fix or theologize.
