Sabbath was designed to be an invitation into the life of God, but in Jesus’ time, Sabbath was distorted. Sabbath became a religious rule that actually kept people from experiencing the life of God. In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus says “the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath” (Mk. 2:27). What does he mean? What is the Sabbath? It was made for us? Jesus invites us to see the Sabbath anew. Sabbathing is an invitation to experience the life of God.
